Before & After - The Prospect Avenue Project

Our time on Prospect Avenue has come to a close. The last of the dust has settled and been cleaned, the straggling cardboard has been removed and the space is ready to be used and abused by the busy family that will call it home. You can check out the original post right here.

This project was completed as part of a home purchase. In this particular instance, we were able to get into the home and complete the renovation prior to the new owners moving in. While ideal, this often isn’t the case for many homeowners looking to buy and renovate. The timeline it takes to assemble a team, gather plans, bids, source product and pull permits can be lengthy (anywhere from 3-9 months…or more!) This project happened to be relatively straight forward and the homeowners were great at making decisions and keeping the ball rolling. It took us about 6 weeks to take this project from concept to construction.

We were challenged by the homeowners to create a warm but contemporary living space for their family. It would be the destination for family movie nights and entertaining friends and family young and old. It should feel fresh and blend with the original architecture of the home - a 1970’s built contemporary masterpiece. It should encompass a new bedroom and new bathroom for their son.

We assembled their team for them of contractor, architect and designer and proposed this mood board, which they were completely on board with.

9 weeks later, we’ve transformed the lower level of their new house into a canvas ready for all the color, texture and layers that make a space home.

We demoed the existing ceiling to be able to add additional fixtures throughout the space. Lighting is such a fun and visual way to define different spaces. While the built-in’s were lovely, they took up valuable square footage in our new bedroom (which sits behind that wall). By removing them, we also were able to dedicate a wall for the television. The built-in’s went on to live their best life, repurposed by one of my Instagram followers in their home. We ran luxury vinyl plank throughout the living spaces and into the bathroom. Since this basement is a walkout, this will be a product that will hold up to dogs, kids and everything else life throws its way. We transformed the structural fireplace by painting it with the same rich color of the interior doors.

The owners plan to use the larger side of the room as the TV area (where you can see we’ve prepped electrical for their television to be mounted), while the other side functions as a game area complete with moody lighting, a new full light exterior door and a table to gather around.

The new bedroom was previously an unfinished storage space. A proper closet was framed out along with Coventry Gray walls by Benjamin Moore. The trim was finished in Benjamin Moore Cloud White throughout and the doors went dark in Hirshfields Subway. Clean lined chrome hardware added a modern moment.

This bathroom is evidence that you don’t have to spend a fortune to get a high-style look. This floating vanity is from Ikea and sets the tone for the space. We floated the mirror ever so slightly to add a little dimension to the wall. The shower is bold with black hexagon tile traveling across the floor and up the accent wall. An 18 x 24” niche installed horizontally adds function and form. The adjacent walls are stacked with matte 3 x 9” subway tile. Modern chrome fixtures, a custom frameless door and sleek hardware complete the look. The wall color in Benjamin Moore Caribbean Blue Water makes a bold statement.

As the owners saw the space coming together, the wood burning stove they were intending on installing down the road started to take precedence. With a 15 week lead time, we’ll have to be patient waiting for their new red/orange Malm wood-burning stove to arrive - but I’m 100% confident it will be worth the wait.

Can’t wait for my clients to be cozied up in this space - I know it’s going to be the perfect backdrop for many family memories to come.
